George Caswell
George Caswell, born April 25, 1940, in Margaretville, NY, passed away on February 9, 2025. He was the son of Ralph Robert Caswell and Mary Wickham Caswell. He was the middle child of three and was predeceased by his siblings, Sheila Caswell Stanton and John Caswell.
George spent his early years in New Kingston, where he developed a strong work ethic and a love for the land. As a young man, he worked for the Town of Middletown Highway Department before serving in the military from January 1966 to January 1968. Upon returning home, he joined the New York State Department of Transportation, working on the bridge crew. Over a dedicated 39-year career between the state and town, he made lasting contributions to the infrastructure of his community before retiring in 1996.
An avid farmer, George raised Hereford cattle on his beloved farm in New Kingston, where he continued to reside after retirement. A man of many skills, he was known for his resourcefulness, hard work, and storytelling. He found great joy in his farm, his family, and sharing memories of times past.
George is survived by his beloved partner, Shirley Sanford; his niece, Kathy Stanton; his nephew, Robert Stanton; and other nieces and nephews in Missouri. His presence, wisdom, and humor will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
A celebration of George’s life and burial will be held on May 31 at 11:00 AM at Thompson Hollow Cemetery in New Kingston.
