Robert Carroll

On Thursday, April 6, 2023, Bob Carroll transitioned peacefully at home to a state of eternal rest. Robert M Carroll was born in Brooklyn NY on January 3, 1946. He was raised in Queens by the late Barbara (Arnold) Carroll and graduated from the prestigious Brooklyn Technical High School in 1963.

Bob went straight into the workforce and made his way up through the ranks of AT&T as a supervisor technician until 1965, when during the Vietnam War he followed the long-time family tradition of enlisting into the U.S. Navy, where he served as a Naval technician on the A-7A aircraft.

A proud patriot, Bob’s time in the service shaped him into the man he was for the remainder of his life. As a member of Attack Squadron 82 aboard the USS America, Bob achieved a rank of ATN3, was awarded the Navy Unit Commendation, the National Defense Service Medal, the Bronze Star Vietnam Service Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign medal. Bob also circumnavigated the entire globe joining an elite group that were initiated into “The Order of Magellan”

He was honorably discharged from the Navy in December 1968, and returned back to Queens and his job at AT&T, where he stayed until moving to Arkville with his wife and children in 1983.

Bob built a new life for himself and his family in the Catskills. He worked for many years as a security technician installing alarm systems in the area. He also furthered his passion and respect for firearms by working in Betz’s Sports Shop.

He was a history buff and his other interests embodied stamp & coin collecting, outdoor sporting activities and his eternal love of doowop music. His heart was so big and anyone who knew him knew that they could count on him for support, laughs, or just some good company.  He will be forever loved and missed by so many.

Bob is predeceased in death by his wife Diane. He is survived by his daughter, Dianne Angelo (Darin) of Syracuse; and his son, Brian Carroll of Brooklyn.

Arrangements will be handled by Hynes Funeral Home, 48 Walnut Street, Margaretville.

Viewings will be Thursday, May 18th, 6-8pm, and Friday, May 19th, 10am-12pm. A graveside service with military honors will be held at the Margaretville Cemetery Annex immediately following.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff of Margaretville Hospital and Helios Health Care for their incredible care and support leading up to Bob’s passing.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Vietnam Veterans of America at vva.org.
