Robert “Bob” Renz
Robert G. Renz, 72 formerly of Robinson Terrace, passed peacefully surrounded by family on Monday, June 24, 2024 at Albany Medical Center.
Bob was born at Bathgate Hospital in Stamford on June 3,1952, the son of Robert C. Renz and Clara E. Moore of Grand Gorge New York. Bob graduated from Grand Gorge Central School in 1970 where he played baseball, basketball, and soccer. Upon graduating he worked on the Blenheim Gilboa Power Project as a Union Laborer, later attending SUNY Delhi before moving to Tennessee to work on construction projects at Oak Ridge National Laboratories. In his free time, he hiked and camped across Tennessee.
Several years later he moved west to the Tacoma, Washington area continuing to work as a Union Laborer. In Washington he discovered his love of fishing, hiking, winter camping and mountain climbing. He climbed mountains from Mexico to Western Alaska. He also joined the Tacoma Mountain Rescue Unit as an EMT.
While climbing in Leavenworth, Washington just before his 40th birthday he fell approximately seventy feet and suffered a traumatic brain injury. In Seattle, he spent time at Harborview Medical Center and the Greenery Rehabilitation Center returning to New York four months later where he lived with family for further rehabilitation and attended a day treatment program. Bob returned to Grand Gorge to live with family and eventually moved to the Grand Gorge Civic Center with assistance from family. In late 2019 he moved to Robinson Terrace.
Bob was pre-deceased by his parents and sisters Roberta Hubbard and Patricia Renz, niece Jennifer Renz Ramsaran and nephew James Fahey. He is survived by his brothers Thomas Renz (Caroline) of New Berlin, Michael Renz (Joanne) of Gilboa, and Shawn Renz (Betsy) of Port St. Lucie, FL and sisters Karen, Gail and Colleen Renz of Grand Gorge, Mary Hinkley (Glenn) of Roxbury, Diane Stripp (Rudy) of Stamford and 14 nieces and nephews as well as longtime companion Susan Gerraputo.
There will be no callings hours. Friends and relatives are invited to a Memorial Service on Wednesday, July 3, 2024 at 11AM at the Miller Funeral Home, 53905 State Highway 30, Roxbury, NY. Inurnment will be at the Gilboa Rural Cemetery at the family’s convenience.
Contributions in memory of Bob may be made to the Grand Gorge Fire Department.
