Peter Yamaoka
Peter Yamaoka died on Sunday January 30, 2022 in Roxbury, NY after a long illness. He was 73 years old. Peter was at home, surrounded by his family and friends.
Peter was born on May 14, 1948 in Glen Cove, NY. He graduated from Rhode Island School of Design, and attended the Royal College of Art in London. Peter was an artist and an avid gardener. The focus of his early work was printmaking, drawing and painting. He lived in New York City for many years, where he founded Hudson Street Press, publishing portfolios of artist editions. Eventually Peter and his wife artist Gerda van Leeuwen relocated to the Catskills. It was here in the Catskills that he shifted his focus to making ceramics.
He is survived by his wife Gerda, his sisters Mira Yamaoka, and Carrie Yamaoka, and her partner Joy Episalla, his niece Kay Yamaoka and her husband James Wheal, his niece Floor Bos and her husband Martijn Rutte, and many extended family members and friends.
In accordance with Peter’s wishes, there will be no funeral services at this time. A memorial celebration of his life will take place in the spring.
