George A. Hillriegel

George A. Hillriegel, 87, of Margaretville went to his rest on Tuesday, September 10, 2024 at his home with his family by his side.
George was born on December 21, 1936 in Margaretville. He graduated from Margaretville Central School in 1955 and married Gail Fairbairn on July 21, 1963.

George was a devout Christian and an active member of the Advent Christian Church from a young age. In more recent years, he served as a deacon and then an elder in the Advent Christian Church in Margaretville. In the past, he served as a councilman for the town of Hardenburgh and a commissioner for the Arena Fire Department.
A born dairy farmer, he helped his family on their farm in the Millbrook Valley for many years before returning to run it himself after getting married. Even after retiring in 2001, he continued to raise heifers and then assisted his son when he took over the family's dairy operation in 2015. George continued helping with chores in the barn up until July of this year.
George was well-known for his loving, gentle nature which touched all who met him, along with his ready sense of humor and penchant for harmless practical jokes. He loved all of God's creatures and never hesitated to help neighbors, strangers, or animals that came into his care. His happiest days were spent at home working on his farm, spending time with his family, and eating sweet treats, especially cookies and ice cream.
He is predeceased by his wife, Gail Hillriegel, his parents, Harold and Leona Wood Hillriegel, his sister Kathleen Hillriegel Avery, and brother Carlton Hillriegel. He is survived by his children, Heidi (Jody) Condon and Donald (Christina) Hillriegel; and his grandchildren, Allegra Condon and Cortlandt, Camden, and Carsyn Hillriegel. He is also survived by six younger siblings and many nieces and nephews.

His funeral will be held on Tuesday, September 17th at 1:00 p.m. at the Advent Christian Church, 109 Maple Street, Margaretville.

In lieu of flowers, donations in George's memory can be made to the Advent Christian Church in Margaretville.
