William “Bill” Stanton
William H. Stanton, lovingly known as "Papa," lived a life filled with love, service, and dedication. On March 18, 2025, at 81, he peacefully left this world, leaving a legacy that will continue to inspire all who knew him.
Bill was born on January 12, 1944, in Oneonta, New York, to Leonard and Janet Hughes Stanton. From a young age, he exemplified hard work, kindness, and dedication. He graduated from Oneonta High School in 1963. In 1965, he married his high school sweetheart and lifelong partner, Maryann Sweeney, with whom he built a life rooted in profound love and shared purpose.
Bill proudly served as a jet engine mechanic in the United States Air Force, stationed at Craig AirField in Selma, Alabama. His military service instilled a strong sense of duty, which carried into every aspect of his life.
In 1969, Bill and Maryann settled in Margaretville, NY, where they raised their family and built lasting friendships with their wonderful Swart Street neighbors. For 35 years, Bill worked as a lineman for NYSEG, known for his reliability, integrity, and unwavering work ethic. But his true calling was in serving his community. A man of boundless generosity, Bill was a dedicated leader—Legion member, youth baseball coach, Scout Master, school board member, village trustee, and mayor. As Scout Master of Boy Scout Troop 80, he mentored nearly a dozen Eagle Scouts, shaping young lives with wisdom and encouragement. As mayor, he guided the village through two devastating floods with resilience and determination.
Bill's greatest joy was his family. He was a devoted father to his two sons, Chris (Ellie) of Schenevus and Jason (Lisa) of Bovina. Later in life, he and Maryann’s hearts expanded even further as they adopted four wonderful daughters: Kati (Nick) of Rochester, Stephanie (Anthony) of Toms River, NJ, Carly (Bobby) of Sacramento, CA, and Cecelia (AJ) of Traverse City, MI. His love extended to his cherished grandchildren—Stephanie, Courtney, Jack, Ian, Alex, Jamie, Albert, Frances, Dorothy, and Johnny—and his great-grandchildren, Gianna and Hailey.
Bill was preceded by his wife, Maryann, on February 22, 2025, his sisters Nancy Chicorelli (John) and Lenda Turner (Ken), and his brother-in-law, Charles Sweeney. He is survived by his brother Scott of Oneonta, sister Alice of Goodyear Lake, and a large extended family of nieces, nephews, and friends blessed by his kindness. He was incredibly grateful for the recent support and friendship of Terry, Dalton, Robert, Gary, Dick, and Mary.
Bill Stanton’s life was a testament to the power of generosity, leadership, and love. His service, laughter, and unwavering devotion to family and community made the world a better place.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, May 22, from 4-7 p.m. at the Hynes Funeral Home, 48 Walnut Street, Margaretville, NY. A joint burial service for Bill and Maryann will take place in Margaretville Cemetery Annex at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 23, with Rev. Paul Moore as celebrant. In place of flowers, the family requests donations to the MARK Project Inc., Memo line, “Flower Fund” PO Box 516, Arkville, New York 12406, in his memory.
