Robert “Bob” McCracken
Robert J. McCracken, 82, of Grand Gorge, passed away on February 28, 2025. He was born on July 22, 1942, in Great Barrington, MA, he was the son of James and Agnes McCracken.
Robert was a husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Robert was predeceased by his beloved wife, Marilyn (Van Etten) McCracken, whom he married on June 25, 1972, together they shared 52 years creating lasting memories. In 1973 he and Marilyn made their home in Grand Gorge, NY where they raised their children and would reside until their death. Marilyn passed away in November 2024.
Robert's greatest pride was his family and faith. Robert grew up in Copake Falls, NY and faithfully attended St. Bridget's Catholic Church. He was a graduate of Roeliff Jansen Central School (Roe Jan), in Hillsdale, NY. After graduation he continued his education at Marist College and SUNY Cobleskill. His education led him to a long career with the State of New York, spending the majority of his career as a surveyor for the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). His career took him to Warrensburg, Stamford, New Paltz, and Schenectady before he eventually settled in Albany's Central Office, where he retired in 2000.
Robert had a passion for the outdoors which began as a child. He had countless stories of childhood shenanigans at Bash Bish Falls, swimming at the "ore pit", and hunting with his buddies & dogs. He was a true lifelong outdoorsman who found both peace and purpose in nature, feeling most at home beneath the open sky. As an adult, he proudly served as an Assistant Scoutmaster, guiding and inspiring the next generation by sharing his knowledge, skills, and deep appreciation for the great outdoors.
Robert's adventurous spirit never faded after retirement. He treasured time spent with his grandchildren, found solace in the companionship of his beloved dog, Charlie, and shared countless memories with his favorite neighbor, Melonie.
Robert leaves behind his children: Patricia McCracken-Little and her partner, Mark Finne; James McCracken and his wife, Tamra; and Joseph McCracken. He was a proud grandfather to Logan, Ailee, Declan, Harley, Seth, and Levi. Robert was predeceased by his parents, wife and many of his dog buddies.
A mass for both Marilyn and Bob will be held on Saturday March 15, 2025 at 12 noon at Sacred Heart Church in Stamford, NY with Father Paul Mijas officiating. In the Spring/Summer they will be returned home to Copake Falls. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Robert's name to the Heart of the Catskills Humane Society, honoring his love for animals.
