Raymond Barkman
Raymond (Roy) Barkman, 89, of Dolen Lane, Schoharie NY passed away Monday, February 5, 2024, peacefully at home after a brief battle with cancer.
Raymond was born September 28, 1934 in Margaretville NY. He was the youngest son of ten children, born to Claude Sr and Iva Mae (Finch) Barkman. He graduated in 1953 from Margaretville Central School where he enjoyed playing football and basketball. After graduating high school Raymond served in the United States Army as a Radio Communication Personal Assistant stationed in Germany. After his service in the Army Raymond worked for the A&P store in Margaretville for 30 years upon retirement, he worked for NBT Bank in Margaretville finally deciding to fully retire in 2000 to spend the winters in Myrtle Beach, SC with his loving wife. They moved to Schoharie, NY to be closer to their children.
Raymond was a loving devoted husband to Priscilla (Frey) and in October they celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. Raymond’s top priority in life was his wife and family. He enjoyed spending time with his children, whether it was working on home projects or family vacations. He is survived by his children Timothy (Bonnie) Barkman of Roxbury, Pamela (Daniel) Drohan of Schenectady, Christine (Mark) Southworth of Delanson and Cheryl (Michelle) Barkman of Malta. Raymond (Papa) was a gentle, kind man with the best “HUGS” that he gave frequently to his grandchildren and great grandchildren, Jennifer (Darren) Hart, Sarah (Matthew) Goodrich and Marjorie Drohan and great grandchildren Allison and Evelyn Hart and Thomas Goodrich.
Raymond loved playing and watching sports. He spent time enjoying the outdoors hunting, fishing and bird watching. He was known for his green thumb and spent several hours in his garden (Papa's Garden). Raymond enjoyed family fishing trips for salmon in Western NY. He was an avid bowler and enjoyed traveling to tournaments. He and Priscilla took pleasure in traveling to various states throughout the United States. When they returned, he looked forward to sharing stories and pictures of his trips with family. Raymond always found serenity sitting out on his deck listening to the birds and rejoiced in the beauty of nature.
Visitation for friends and family will be held on Saturday, February 10, 2024 at the First Presbyterian Church of Margaretville 87 Orchard Street, Margaretville, NY beginning at 1:00pm. A funeral service will begin at 2pm with Pastor Deb Judisky officiating.
Private graveside services will be held at a later date at the Sanford Cemetery, 293 County Road 6 Margaretville, NY.
