Fred Temming

Frederick Frank Temming, aka, Fred Jr., 79, passed away peacefully Sunday, April 24, 2022 at his home in Margaretville, NY after a lengthy battle with COPD.  Born February 15, 1943, in Brooklyn, NY to  Frederick J. Temming and Anne (Huttel) Temming, Fred grew up the second of six siblings. The family moved to Andes, NY in 1946 when his father purchased the Andes Hotel.

The Andes Hotel was run by the Temming family for 54 years – first by Fred Sr. and eventually taken over by Fred Jr. and his brother Frank in 1980, who ran it until it was sold in 1999.   The Andes Hotel was central to the Andes community and to the Temming Family.   It was truly a family business, with the Temming sons working side by side.   For three generations, members of the Temming family served as chef, hostess, waiter, or bartender –many for years, some for a summer or two. The Andes Hotel was closed one day a year, Christmas Day.  The place would be full on Thanksgiving, Easter, and Mother’s Day serving over 200 customers for each.  Countless family memories were made in that dining room.

Fred Jr., as he was known, worked in the Andes Hotel his entire life.   In his youth, when he wasn’t playing basketball, or soccer or serving as an acolyte at St. Anne’s Catholic Church, he was working in the restaurant.  After taking over the business, when not in the kitchen putting out breakfast, lunch, and dinner he was somewhere in the building, always with a smile on his face and a welcoming spirit.  He was a volunteer Fireman and driver of the Ambulance.  Fred Jr. was known to drop everything, including dinner service, to run out to a call.  Fred Jr. and his family touched an entire community and for that we are forever grateful.

Fred married the love of his life, Betty (Atkin) Temming, in 1965. They enjoyed 56 years of marriage and raised 3 sons with the abiding belief that family is the most important thing in life.

Fred Jr. was proceeded in death by his parents, his sister, Betty (Temming) Johnson, and his nephew, Tyler J. Smith.  He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Betty (Atkin), sons Robin, Ryan and wife Holly, Brett and wife Lorene, as well as grandchildren Ollie, Harper, and Evie Kate.  He is also survived by his siblings Joseph, Frank, Paul, and Theresa.

There will be a Church Service held Saturday, August 20, 2022 at the St. Anne’s Mission in Andes at 10:00 followed by a Memorial Celebration at The Andes Hotel beginning at 1:00. We invite anyone who knew Fred Jr. to attend and celebrate his wonderful life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Andes Fire Department.
