Evelyn Mitchel Ellsworth

Evelyn Ann Mitchel Ellsworth, born March 22, 1935 in Nutley NJ, passed away peacefully at her home in Roxbury NY on May 16, 2022. Ev had a full and colorful life. Her favorite childhood times were horseback riding and spending time at the Jersey Shore. At an early age she married Richard Harry Ellsworth Sr. and gave birth to four daughters and one son. As a single mother, she continued her education at night school while driving a school bus during the day. She went on to earn her teaching degree and taught English at Kittatinny Regional High School for eighteen years. She moved on to become a life coach and mentor for women training for non-traditional jobs. She took more pleasure in other’s successes, than her own, and remained true to herself at all times.

After retirement in 1990, Ev made her permanent home in Roxbury.  She was one of the founding members of Writers in the Mountains and as a writer, a student, and a teacher, she earned the respect and love of many. Her creativity in all aspects of the arts was only surpassed by her love for family and friends. Ev moved into the home of Bonnie and Steve Walker in 2011—a place that she cherished. A swim in the pond, followed by a relaxing afternoon on the porch, or feeding the crows helped make Ev’s life complete.

Ev is survived by a sister, Dorothy Mitchel Schweyer; four daughters, Jeanne Ellsworth (Kent Garrett), Bonnie Ellsworth Walker (Steve Walker), Donna Ellsworth Brand (Scott Brand), and Evelyn Ellsworth Condit; and a son, Richard Harry Jr. (Peg Ellsworth). She is also survived by twelve grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren and numerous young people that her life has touched; and her cat Audrey.

There will be a celebration of life on Thursday, June 2, from 4-6 pm at the Kirkside Park Barns, Main Street, Roxbury. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Roxbury Library Association, PO Box 186, Roxbury, NY 12474
